Summary of the Book

The course of south Indian history from pre-historic times to the current era is a complex and intricate narrative with the possibility of several interpretations. Drawing on the recent progresses in the study of the region, this title offers an evaluation of the events and socio-cultural development of south India through a comprehensive examination of its historical trajectory. It further delves into the growth of industries in relation to the development of East - West oceanic trade in the Indian Ocean and the course of commercial relations with various other European countries. The book then discusses the arrival of early-modern state rule, impact of the Ryotwari system introduced by the British, decline of matriliny in Kerala, debates about whether the region's economy advanced or depreciated during the eighteenth century, emergence of the Dravidian Movement and the entwining of politics with up-to-date popular culture. A Concise History of South India is well illustrated with maps and images and has incorporated new archaeological evidence and historiography.
